Description

BG-42 Jefferson Airplane 1966 Fillmore Auditorium Concert Poster Graded 9.2. First-printing San Francisco concert poster for the Jefferson Airplane, the Junior Wells Chicago Blues Band and Tim Rose playing at the Fillmore Auditorium on Friday thru Sunday nights, December 16-18, 1966. Known as BG-42 in the Bill Graham numbered series, this poster was designed by Wes Wilson and graded to a very respectable 9.2 Near Mint Minus by CGC (the Certified Guaranty Company).

The Airplane had already recorded all of Surrealistic Pillow, their breakthrough album, but it wouldn't be released for a few more weeks. Junior Wells was taking a break from his work with Buddy Guy at the time. And Tim Rose had the additional benefit of having his regional hit "Hey Joe" mentioned on the poster.

It's pretty unusual, though not unprecedented, for designer Wilson to have put "Hey Joe" on this poster right under Rose's name. (He had put the Young Rascals' "Good Lovin'" on BG-24, for example.) Rose appeared as an opening act at the Fillmore on two consecutive weekends, BG-41 and this poster, and in both instances Wes included "Hey Joe." Rose had a regional hit in the Bay Area in 1966 with his slow, serious take of the song, as opposed to the Byrds' and the Leaves' uptempo rocking versions. None other than Jimi Hendrix had seen Rose perform his slow rendition at the Café Wha? in New York City and recorded his own similarly down-tempo version, which became a big international hit for Jimi - but alas, not for Rose.
