BG-222 Jefferson Airplane 1970 Grateful Dead Benefit Concert Poster. First-printing San Francisco concert poster for Jefferson Airplane, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Santana, It's a Beautiful Day and Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks playing one benefit concert on Monday, February 23, 1970. This poster is known as BG-222 in the Bill Graham numbered poster series. This was a benefit concert for everyone's friends The Grateful Dead, who had just been busted for drugs in New Orleans (an event that was the genesis for the Dead's famous song "Truckin'").

Many collectors of rock art consider this to be poster artist Randy Tuten's finest hour. It's an extremely popular poster because most people just hang onto it; it simply doesn't up for sale very often. Heritage has only had two for sale in the last 15 years.

Before the show, two versions of this poster were run; a monochromatic brown & white version, and this colorful beauty. We don't need to tell you which version most collectors prefer.

Measures 13 7/8" x 21" and grades to Very Good Minus condition. The whole story here is a 6 ¾" diagonal crease in the lower right corner area which breaks color. The poster was also dinged in the upper center area, leaving creases in the skulls to the right of the central figure's head. Another pair of surface creases are present in the upper left area, buried in the skulls. There's also a little surface creasing to the right of "February" in the upper right. A couple of other very small surface creases are present, and little dings to the grey edge down near lower right corner. And the verso is pretty well toned and shows the after-effects of the folded-up corner, which must have been that way for a while. The verso also betrays a poster-wide horizontal crease near the top, with some rub-off grey color from another source showing up in places. COA from Heritage Auctions.
