Description

BG-19 "The Beard" by Michael McClure 1966 Fillmore Theatrical Poster Signed by Wes Wilson. First-printing San Francisco theater performance poster for a presentation of Michael McClure's controversial play The Beard. The poster advertised "One Performance Only" on Sunday night, July 24, 1966 at the Fillmore Auditorium. This was an example of promoter Bill Graham pushing the envelope and testing the waters around rock concerts to see how they'd do. Designed by Wes Wilson and known as BG-19 in the Bill Graham numbered series, this poster has been signed by the late Mr. Wilson in pencil down in the lower right margin.

Measures 14" x 20" and grades to Very Good condition. Poster has six evenly distributed pinholes, all in the top and bottom white margins; the one in the top center margin has faint remnants of a 'halo' left by the thumbtack head. The upper right corner has a 1 ¼" diagonal corner crease and the lower right corner has a 1 ½" diagonal corner crease, and through the wonders of thick vellum paper, you can't really see either on the front. Notice there's a small blemish in the white by Wes Wilson's signature. And there's a small prick in the paper right under the first "C" of "McClure," and a little sign of it on the verso, but it doesn't appear to be a hole. General toning throughout. From the David Swartz Concert Poster Collection. COA from Heritage Auctions.
