Description

BG-176 Grateful Dead 1969 Fillmore West Concert Poster Signed by Randy Tuten, Graded 9.8. First-printing San Francisco concert poster for the Grateful Dead, Jr. Walker & the All Stars and the Glass Family playing at the Fillmore West on Thursday thru Sunday nights, June 5-8, 1969. Designed by Randy Tuten and known as BG-176 in the Bill Graham numbered series, this poster was signed by Tuten in silver pen down at the bottom, and then graded a standout 9.8 Near Mint/Mint by CGC (the Certified Guaranty Company). Measures 14" x 21". From the David Swartz Concert Poster Collection. COA from Heritage Auctions.

More Information: June 1969 is when Warner Bros. Records released the Dead's third LP, Aoxomoxoa. And second-billed Jr. Walker had a major feather in his cap at this moment, too. Three weeks earlier, his most recognizable and enduring hit was released: "What Does It Take (To Win Your Love)," which rose to #4 on the national pop charts.

This was an adventuresome four-night run for the Dead. According to the authoritative coffee-table book Grateful Dead - The Illustrated Trip (DK Publishing, New York, 2003), on Friday night Elvin Bishop came out and jammed on the only Dead performance ever of "Checkin' Up on My Baby," and the band also broke out "The Green, Green Grass of Home."

Saturday night marked the first-ever performance of "Dire Wolf," and Janis Joplin came out and joined her drinking buddy Pigpen on the classic "Turn on Your Love Light." And then on Sunday the Dead did two songs they apparently haven't done since: "The Things I Used to Do" and "Who's Lovin' You Now."
