Description

BG-174 Creedence Clearwater Revival 1969 "Titanic" S.F. Concert Poster Graded 9.4. First-and-only-printing San Francisco concert poster for John Fogerty and Creedence Clearwater Revival, the Northern California State Youth Choir (Featuring Dorothy Morrison) and the Bangor Flying Circus playing four dates for promoter Bill Graham in May 1969... two at Winterland and two at the Fillmore West.

Designed by Randy Tuten, this poster is known as BG-174 in the Bill Graham numbered poster series and was subsequently graded an oh-happy-day 9.4 Near Mint by CGC (the Certified Guaranty Company).

CCR was just stepping into their prime at this point, playing behind their Top 10 album Bayou Country and its smash hit "Proud Mary." And this was also the month that their follow-up success, "Bad Moon Rising," hit the Billboard charts.

Rock fans would recognize the second-billed act much better had they been the Edwin Hawkins Singers, who had a Top 5 hit at this moment with "Oh Happy Day" with Dorothy Morrison on lead vocal. Hawkins also co-founded the Northern California State Youth Choir, so he had Morrison join them and sing her big hit on this occasion, thus her name on the poster.

The third-billed act, Bangor Flying Circus, sounds like an equally puzzling entity leaving the rock music solely to Creedence, but no: they were prog-rock trio from Chicago. They were formed by two members from the Shadows of Knight ("Gloria") and the drummer from H.P. Lovecraft. But BFC lasted only a couple of years, at which point the two Shadows guys went on to form Madura, who charted one album for Columbia Records in 1971.

Measures 14" x 21". From the David Swartz Concert Poster Collection. COA from Heritage Auctions.
