Description
BG-162 Grateful Dead 1969 Fillmore West Poster Signed by Lee Conklin, Graded 9.8. First-printing San Francisco concert poster for the Grateful Dead, Pentangle and the Sir Douglas Quintet playing at the Fillmore West on Thursday thru Sunday nights, February 27-March 2, 1969. Known as BG-162 in the Bill Graham numbered series, this poster was designed by Lee Conklin and was signed by him in the lower right. It was subsequently graded a glowing-embers 9.8 Near Mint/Mint by CGC (the Certified Guaranty Company).Dead fans can rejoice that several recordings from this weekend were used for Live/Dead, the band's first-of-many live albums, released by Warner Bros. in November. Those would include an epic 23-minute "Dark Star" from the opening night. Measures 14" x 21". From the David Swartz Concert Poster Collection. COA from Heritage Auctions.
More Information: The poster's artwork features a dazzling combination of rust & orange colors, with the seven-member Dead's photo in the middle, taken once again by Herb Greene. Surrounding that are hidden images of faces, skulls and concert information, which Bill Graham disdained when it was camouflaged like this.
Also released on Live/Dead were "St. Stephen" from the opening night, and "Death Don't Have No Mercy," "Feedback" and "And We Bid You Goodnight" from the closing night.
Pentangle was a traditional English folk quartet, touring behind its self-titled debut album on Reprise but who never broke through in the slightest. The Sir Douglas Quintet, on the other hand, led by Doug Sahm, were Bay-Area favorites by way of Austin, Texas. They racked up plenty of S.F. concert (and poster) appearances over the years. At this point Doug & Co. were enjoying the fruits of their semi-hit single "Mendocino" and album of the same name, the most successful in their career.
