Description
BG-140 Jimi Hendrix Experience 1968 Winterland S.F. Concert Poster Graded 9.8. First-printing San Francisco concert poster for the Jimi Hendrix Experience, the Buddy Miles Express and Dino Valenti playing at the Winterland ballroom on Thursday thru Saturday nights, October 10-12, 1968. Known as BG-140 in the Bill Graham numbered series, this poster was handed an electrifying grade of 9.8 Near Mint/Mint by the Certified Guaranty Company (CGC).It's well-known among BG poster collectors that Griffin and Moscoso created this image and that of BG-141 together as a true collaboration. The two artistic masters sat side-by-side with both art boards in front of them and themed their work on what they had designed together for Zap Comix. Measures 14 1/8" x 21 1/2". From the David Swartz Concert Poster Collection. COA from Heritage Auctions.
More Information: No rock star in San Francisco was ever hotter than Jimi Hendrix in the fall of 1968. At this moment, his classic single "All Along the Watchtower" was headed up Billboard magazine's singles chart, destined for the Top 20 and easily his biggest hit ever. Meanwhile Jimi's landmark album Electric Ladyland would be released by Reprise Records the week after these concerts, quickly becoming an essential ingredient of underground FM radio playlists. Jimi's star would never shine brighter.
BG-140 and BG-141 were for consecutive weekends in San Francisco promoted by Graham, but at different venues. Hendrix was the bigger draw so he was at Winterland, whereas BG-141 (headlined by Iron Butterfly) was held at the smaller Fillmore West.
Buddy Miles, the second-billed act, would eventually become Jimi's touring drummer, of course, in Band of Gypsys (with Billy Cox on bass). He had met Hendrix way back in 1964 when they both were just unsung sidemen. Buddy had even played on a couple of Ladyland tracks, "Rainy Day, Dream Away" and "Still Raining, Still Dreaming." The Buddy Miles Express was his short-lived band after the dissolution of the Electric Flag, for which he had pounded the skins.
If you don't know the third-billed act, Dino Valenti, we'd like to point out that actually, you do. All Dino did was write one of the 60's most memorable love-and-peace anthems, "Get Together," an evergreen hit for the Youngbloods in the summer of '69. And as a member of the early 70's version of Quicksilver Messenger Service, Dino sang lead on two chestnuts that live on to this day, "Fresh Air" and "What About Me." (This writer is partial to "Don't Cry My Lady Love.")
