BG-14 Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, Grace Slick 1966 Fillmore Poster Signed by Wes Wilson, Graded 9.6. First-printing San Francisco concert poster for no fewer than nine acts playing for Bill Graham over three nights at his Fillmore Auditorium to kick off the summer of '66 and celebrate the big Fourth of July weekend. Given the umbrella name "Independence Ball," designer Wes Wilson came up with a sweet combination of pink & purple to draw attention to his poster. Very nice that he has signed this specimen down in the lower right. The shows ran Friday-Sunday July 1-3, 1966. Measures 14" x 20" and was graded a firecracker-ish 9.6 Near Mint Plus by CGC (the Certified Guaranty Company). COA from Heritage Auctions.

More Information: CGC's yellow grading strip at the top signifies this poster is part of the company's Signature Series, meaning Mr. Wilson's signature was executed right in front of one of CGC's representatives, and is even dated as such, in this case 10 years ago.

The talent line-up consisted of the Grateful Dead, Big Brother & the Holding Company (with the newly arrived Janis Joplin), the Great Society with Grace Slick, Quicksilver Messenger Service, the Charlatans, Arthur Lee & Love, Sopwith Camel, the Jaywalkers and, last but least, Group B.

Interesting how this was one of the few Bill Graham concert posters that gave no ticket locations; in fact, were there any options at all? All it says at the bottom is, "Tickets at the Door."

Given the choice of attending just one night in a time machine, a lot of classic-rock fans would have trouble choosing... do you pick Janis Joplin as a new member of Big Brother (Friday night), Grace Slick singing "Somebody to Love" with her first band supported by the "Seed" act themselves, the Charlatans (Saturday night), or Jerry Garcia & the Dead (Sunday)? Janis, Grace or Jerry?
