A DOUBLE-WHAMMY OF NEAR MINT/MINT & ARTIST SIGNATURE

BG-134 Grateful Dead, Santana 1968 Fillmore West Poster Signed by Lee Conklin, Graded 9.8. First-printing San Francisco concert poster for the Grateful Dead, Santana, Steppenwolf and three other bands playing at the Fillmore West Auditorium on Tuesday thru Sunday, August 27-September 1, 1968. Designed by Lee Conklin and known as BG-134 in the Bill Graham numbered series, this poster has been signed by Conklin and graded a roaring 9.8 Near Mint/Mint by CGC (the Certified Guaranty Company).

This poster represents one of the most famous, popular and enduring images to emerge from the psychedelic poster scene of the 1960's. So popular that Santana appropriated the poster's central artwork for their debut album cover the following year, turning the already highly admired art into legend.

It's a poster for the ages, no question about it, and we're thrilled to be offering one of those 60's posters that everyone wanted to put up on their wall... but in beautiful, unused condition, now preserved forever. Measures 14" x 21" and graded 9.8. From the David Swartz Concert Poster Collection. COA from Heritage Auctions.

More Information: The poster performed double duty, advertising two sets of shows. To the left of the lion you had Steppenwolf, whose first hit, "Born to Be Wild," was the #2 record in the country right now; plus the venerable Staple Singers and that unknown local rookie blues-rock band led by a Hispanic guitarist, Santana. Those shows were on weeknights from August 27-29. For the weekend, on the lion's right, the Grateful Dead led the charge, whose second LP, Anthem of the Sun, was entering Billboard's album chart this very week. They were supported by the Preservation Hall Jazz Band and the Sons of Champlin, the latter misspelled "Champlan" on the poster.
