    Description

Alice Cooper / MC5 / John Lee Hooker Etc. 1970 Baton Rouge, LA Festival Poster. A poster that's a great example of the 1960s ending and the 1970s beginning. What became the only Festival of Man and Earth in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, this lineup was incredible.

Held at Thunderbird Beach on Memorial Day weekend, this three-day festival booked Chuck Berry, John Lee Hooker, and the Youngbloods with Alice Cooper, MC5, and the Bob Seger System (misspelled as "Seeger" on this poster). Rain was a major issue throughout the weekend, as were police raids. A projected 18,000 attendees dwindled to 8,000 on its first day, and less the following days.

Boasting about speakers and exhibits on ecology and a filtered swimming area, along with a beach and plenty of space to camp, this earth-friendly event was held only a dozen miles away from Baton Rouge. There was local pushback from townspeople and there was a drug raid. Still, the festival happened.

Having pioneers like John Lee Hooker and Chuck Berry with newcomers Alice Cooper (the band was on its Easy Action album tour cycle) and the testifying sounds of the MC5 made for a strong mix of new and old.

Measures 20" x 29" and grades to Very Good Minus condition. Poster has much surface creasing and handling throughout, feeling every bit its 50 years of age. Brown water stains at the top; different kinds of brown markings, including a footprint, found in the upper white area and the lower left & right white areas. A 2 ½" edge tear in the blue lake has been mended on the back with cello tape. Two staple holes in each corner, but that's hardly a factor. Small circular stain at the base of the tree trunk. Much handling throughout and some toning. COA from Heritage Auctions.
