Description
"Rock 'N' Roll with Alan Freed" 1956 High School Gym Sock Hop Poster. An original cardboard window card advertising a dance hosted by Mr. Rock 'n' Roll himself, Alan Freed, with music by "Big Al" Sears, who was an ongoing saxophonist in Freed's touring reviews. A very attractive purple & white board with a really pleasing type font and great picture of the legendary DJ and promoter. There's not a lot of detail to be found about this event. There are several Freeport High Schools across America, but we're guessing it's the one located in Freeport, Long Island, New York, about 35 miles east of New York City. And the poster dates to either 1956 or '62, but given the look of Freed's picture and the $1.50 admission price, we're putting our chips on 1956.
Measures 14" x 22" and grades to Very Good Plus condition with creasing in all corners, a ¼" tear near the center portion, soiling in various spots, tape residue in the bottom left corner, and a tear in the "4" of May 4. Also has "Buy Tickets Here" written in black ink on verso. COA from Heritage Auctions.
