"Here Comes The Boys" Oversized Globe R&B Concert Poster w/Day-Glo Colors (1968).
A jumbo, oversized cardboard window card featuring a number of superstar R&B hitmakers including Jerry Butler, Solomon Burke, Bobby "Blue" Bland, Mary Wells, Eddie Floyd and Clarence Carter. This beauty has more florescent colors than almost any other concert poster of the era, with Day-Glo green, yellow, pink, orange and blue used to great effect. If you factor in the black and white as well, you have a total of seven colors to grab potential customers' attention. The show advertised was on Monday, Sept. 2, 1968 in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Advance admission was just $3.50.

A slight grammatical error leads off the color portion, with "Here Comes [sic] The Boys" used as the tour's tagline. Following that are 10 dynamic R&B artists, all with either photos or song titles, many with both. Among the smash hits given are Jerry Butler's "Never Give You Up," Eddie Floyd's hugely influential "Knock on Wood" and Clarence Carter's "Slip Away." And then there's the belle of the ball, Mary Wells... what a huge picture, a foot & a half tall! Everyone loves the first successful female musician in Motown Records history (although she was on to another record label by now).

This poster was printed using Day-Glo florescent inks, which really stand out in broad daylight. And then those inks take on a whole new appearance under a blacklight, those purple tube-lights that became all the rage in head shops and hippie pads in the late Sixties. Check out the additional photo of this poster under a blacklight, it adds quite a wow factor.

This commanding poster measures 22" x 32 ¾", and grades to Very Good condition with staple and tack holes in the corner areas, a few small bends & creases as expected, and light restoration addressing the upper-left corner and a five-inch tear (now invisible) in the bottom center through Mary Wells' hand. COA from Heritage Auctions.
