In 1968, Mick Jagger approached director Michael Lindsay-Hogg to make a full-length television show for the BBC starring the Stones and their guests. The idea of combining rock and the circus came up and they created a big top replica at a sound stage in Wembley. The Rolling Stones, The Who, John Lennon, Eric Clapton, Jethro Tull, Taj Mahal, and others all performed in front of an invited audience. When the filming finally wrapped after about fifteen hours, Jagger was so disappointed in the quality of his group's performance that he withheld the film from release. It was not until 1996 that the film and album was finally made available to the public.
