"In the moment... November 1970: the Vietnam War rages on, Richard Nixon is in the White House and John Lindsay is the Mayor of New York City... my home.

"I'm 23 years old, a young, professional photographer. Through my lens, what faces would I see, what decisive moments would I capture? On a train from Grand Central to Port Chester - the first of four nights of the Grateful Dead, in concert at the Capitol Theatre. Followed a few days later with one concert at the Fillmore East. Stoned, in the moment, on a wild, hypnotic ride, my camera as my voice... "Uncle John's Band", "Truckin'", "Casey Jones", "St. Stephen", "Good Lovin", "Friend of the Devil", "Dark Star"...

"Forty-nine years later, I realize that while a rock band's fame is an elusive thing, capable of swelling to gargantuan proportions at one time and shrinking to the size of a lonely spotlight at others, the Grateful Dead will always remain real to me, in that moment."
