Beatles - An Early Vintage Photograph of George Harrison and His Friend Arthur Kelly (UK, 1957). In late 1955 George Harrison's parents purchased an Egmond flat top acoustic guitar for their son, who, although not quite yet a teenager, had become obsessed with the instrument and rock & roll. Perhaps swayed by George's passion, his best friend Arthur Kelly acquired a (somewhat nicer) Hoyer archtop acoustic. Together they formed what was George's first band, The Rebels, which played one public performance in the boy's Liverpool neighborhood of Speke. George would become a member of The Quarrymen about a year after this photo was taken.

This photograph of Arthur and George, probably taken in the Spring or Summer of 1957, shows the two 14-year-olds posing with their very first guitars and bears Arthur Kelly's name and London address on the reverse, written in pencil. The words "Return to George Harrison" look to have been written and erased on the verso in an unknown hand, although likely not Harrison's.

Although this image has been widely circulated and published, this appears to be an original vintage print, at one time possibly owned by one or both of the two persons pictured. In overall Very Good condition, with numerous creases and a spot of unknown residue just at the mid-point of Arthur's guitar neck, and the above-mentioned markings on the verso. Measures approximately 5" x 3.5". From the Uwe Blaschke Beatles Collection.
