Rick Griffin Sketchbook with Grateful Dead Original Art (c. late 1980s-1991). Poster and Zap Comix artist Rick Griffin was heavily involved with designing images for the Grateful Dead, and this rare sketchbook from his studio includes four pages of Dead art, including an iconic Skull and Roses illustration (doodled from scratch with no pencil lines, in Excellent condition); three small Hamlet-inspired sketches in ink over graphite; three more pencil-only sketches of the same subject, worked up as rough ideas for the cover of Conversations With the Dead: The Grateful Dead Interview Book (book was published in 1991); and finally, a 6" x 9" alternate version of the same cover, created in ink and pasted-on photocopy images.
But for those interested in the artist himself, there are six pages of cryptic personal notes in both ink and graphite, including a doodle that reflected Griffin's Christianity. One page mentions "too much hair -- must cut" and Griffin's desire to relocate to a "beautiful place in the country for Gina, the boys & I with room for Miles and Katy." That place turned out to be the lovely town of Petaluma, located 40 miles north of San Francisco; this is where Griffin had his fatal motorcycle accident on August 18,1991.
This 14" x 17" Strathmore Sketch spiral-bound book is in overall Very Good condition. None of the art pieces are signed, but we closely examined the piece, and verified Griffin's hand-lettering; all the art is definitely in Griffin's 1980s heavy line style. A most interesting artifact from one of the most important artists of the late 20th century!
