Rick Griffin Hosanna Study Original Art (c. 1979). Rick Griffin, one of the original Zap Comix and San Francisco Poster artists, became a Christian in the mid-1970s, and it immediately resulted in a change in his artwork. Gone were the flying eyeballs popularized by his famous Jimi Hendrix Fillmore concert poster, replaced with exotic yet devout images inspired by the Bible. This large piece was done as a study for a full-color illustration created for a Christian-themed book, The Gospel of John, which was released in 1980. A very similar image found use in 1979 as the cover of an album of Christian rock music, released by the Marantha label in 1979. The word "Hosanna" in Christian terminology means a "shout of praise or adulation made in recognition of the messiahship of Jesus." While all that information is important, one does not have to have religious leanings to appreciate this magnificent drawing, an oversized preliminary, or study, for the final published work of art. It's drawn in graphite with gouache or watercolor on brown paper (Griffin referred to it as "butcher paper"), with an approximate image area of 33" x 30"; it's been matted and framed to an overall size of 47.5" 44.5". The paper has been folded, and there are tack holes and minor stress lines throughout, but somehow this seems to add to the mystery and depth this mesmerizing piece has; overall condition is Good. It is truly an awe-inspiring piece of artwork that will enlighten all those who come in contact with it.
