DescriptionJefferson Airplane Fillmore East Concert Poster Original Art by David Byrd (1968). Now this is something special. Original artwork for the Bill Graham posters of the 1960s rarely, if ever, turn up -- most have been lost, destroyed, or stashed away in private collections, never to be seen. This stunning piece of hand-crafted art, done in an "Ancient Egypt" style, is in ink and watercolor on board with an approximate size of 26.5" x 15.25"; extensive notes from the artist, David Byrd, state that this is "several inches larger than the poster was printed." A hand-lettered type correction, made to make "Fillmore East" appear larger, is taped on the reverse side, and a penciled preliminary on onionskin, with an image area of 6" x 10", is also included. A Letter of Authenticity signed by Mr. Byrd, plus the afore-mentioned sheet of typed notes, are added to the lot.
David Byrd was one of the most important poster artists of the sixties era, particularly for the East Coast. He created all the art for Bill Graham's Fillmore East posters, as well as poster art for Jimi Hendrix, The Rolling Stones, The Who, and the Grateful Dead. The very first version of the Woodstock poster was by Mr. Byrd, and he created images for Broadway shows as well, including Jesus Christ Superstar.
The artboard to this piece includes some minor tanning and small stains and corner; it's in overall Very Good condition, and is signed. It's definitely a one-of-a-kind item.
