DescriptionGrateful Dead Mandala (2006). In the form of a pentagon, made of maple and burled wood, with a beautiful mother-of-pearl and painted inlay depicting the "Steal Your Face" logo in the center, signed on the back in black felt-tip ink "Gordon R. Merrick 23/100 Arundel, ME '06." Merrick is an East Coast craftsman who made a number of similar pieces for other Dead Family members over the decades (though this one was made for a private individual); interestingly, The Grateful Dead had an almost identical mandala like this, made by Merrick, that they hung on the wall of their recording studio in San Rafael, California. The large and impressive Mandala measures approximately 43" x 42" x 1".
Merrick defines a 'mandala' as "a geometric pattern formed by repeated imagery. Originally the image was a form of deity and used for meditation."
