Beatles - Stuart Sutcliffe Original Pen and Ink Sketch of Plants (Late 1950s). An unsigned 4.25" x 7" ink sketch in sepia tones by the early Beatle, also a talented artist. Removed from one of his sketchbooks. Double matted in black to an overall 11.75" x 15.75". Rough at edges, overall Fine. From the Uwe Blaschke Beatles Collection.

The casual Beatle fan might not know that the Beatles originally had a fifth member, Stuart Sutcliffe. Sutcliffe was an a friend of John Lennon from the Liverpool College of Art who joined the group in January 1960 as bassist, and it was Stuart and John who collectively came up with the name "The Beatles". He left the group in mid-1961 (before their recording career and later worldwide fame) choosing to stay in Hamburg with his fiance Astrid Kirchherr, and resuming his art studies under Eduardo Paolozzi. Sutcliffe tragically died suddenly on April 10, 1962, the day before the Beatles arrived for their third Hamburg residency, this time to open the Star-Club.
