Beatles Cartoon Series Original Animation Cels and Background Art. The Beatles cartoon series was an instant hit on ABC-TV, running from 1965 through 1967. In order to expedite the production in the wake of Beatlemania, episodes were produced at different studios in Australia, the UK, and Canada. The well-respected veteran animator Frank Andrina worked on the series at CanaWest Studios in Vancouver in 1965 and 1966. The items in the following four lots were part of Andrina's Beatles output, which Andrina gifted to animation sculptor Kent Melton in the 1990s when the two men worked together on a project for Disney. Melton, whose work has been seen in numerous features from the Disney and Laika studios, has consigned the Andrina archive to this auction.

Largely due to the decentralized production of The Beatles, original material is very difficult to find and only rarely comes to auction. The Andrina archive represents more total material from The Beatles cartoon series than we've offered in Heritage's history, and offers a rare chance to own these very desirable Beatle items, which come with the provenance of a person directly involved in their creation.

The first lot is a pair of original animation cels from Season 1, Episode 10, "Long Tall Sally." A cel from Scene 15 showing all four Beatles walking in profile behind a sinister-looking butler is accompanied by another cel from the same scene showing just their legs in different positions - the legs being the only moving parts in the sequence, there was no need to redraw their upper bodies. The first cel has been nicely positioned over a hand-drawn background from Scene 62 of the same episode for display purposes, but they remain independent items. Displayed in their 15" x 13" matte the image size is 11" x 9", the overall item sizes are slightly larger. On the verso of the background art piece the animator Frank Andrina has signed, dated, and inscribed the work to his friend and colleague Kent Melton. In Very Good original condition, with a slight bit of loss at the top left of the background drawing.
