1950's BLUES POSTERS ALMOST DON'T EXIST

Muddy Waters 1957 Genuine, Original Boxing-Style Concert Poster Outside of Chicago. A remarkable and fully authentic Muddy Waters advertising window card from Rockford, Illinois, about 90 miles west of Chicago, for a show on Saturday evening, October 19, 1957.

It's blue color handsomely matches the genre of music, and the photo of Muddy looking right at the camera nicely captures his essence. "In Person - The One and Only, Ever-Popular Muddy Waters and his Orchestra!" it proclaims. And then it gives a couple of song titles... "Don't Go No Farther" was a Top 10 R&B hit for Muddy the previous year, written by Willie Dixon; and "Diamonds at Your Feet" was that single's B-side, written by Muddy (or should we say, McKinley Morganfield).

This poster was so early in Muddy's career that he had never appeared on an LP of any kind yet. Not a studio album, not a live album, not a greatest-hits album, not even as a guest appearing on somebody else's album. He was strictly a blues/R&B gut-bucket 45 and 78 RPM-releasing Chess Records artist. The following year, in 1958, Chess would compile a lot of those singles into The Best of Muddy Waters, his first long-player.

This poster is possibly unique, as blues concert posters from the 50's are impossible to find. They were run in small numbers and usually discarded right after the shows. So this is the only specimen of this concert poster that the country's biggest poster collectors have ever seen surface.

The poster measures 14" x 22" and grades to Very Good condition. Tack holes in each corner. One very unobtrusive horizontal crease across the poster going through "In Person". Another lighter one going through the bottom of "Waters." Likewise with a crease going down from the "S" in "Waters" through the "A" in "Orchestra" and "Your" and to the edge, culminating in a half-inch tear down there. Each of the corners has creasing which are so faint, they're best detected by looking at the verso. Also a small blue printer's flaw to the right of Muddy's picture into the white margin. But really... does anybody care?
