    Description

The Cavern Club Handbill (UK, 1959). 6.5" x 8". "The Cavern Presents Monday 3rd August 1959". This handbill exemplifies the Cavern's transition from that of primarily a jazz club to a venue for the skiffle craze which would itself give way to the juggernaut of rock and roll. The month started out with a traditional jazz program highlighted by Terry Lightfoot and The Druids Jazz Band, but as the month progressed the skiffle influence was prominent with such groups as The Darktown Skiffle Group (with perhaps Ringo Starr as drummer), The Texans Skiffle Group (which would evolve into Rory Storm and the Hurricanes). The month ended with an evening of jazz by way of Ken Collyer and skiffle by The Blue Jeans Skiffle Group. This handbill represents the genesis of a turning point in the Liverpool music scene which was to have an historic impact on popular music. The handbill has some modest wrinkling, has "1959" written in pencil on the top-left of the verso, and three old, smoothed fold creases, otherwise the print remains bright with a trivial amount of toning to the paper. Fine.
