John Lennon's Black Hat Worn On The Cover Of A Spaniard In The Works (Simon & Schuster, 1965). Felt, wide brimmed hat, with gilt stamp inside "Fabricacion Selecta". The hat is accompanied by a signed affidavit dated 25th May, 1984 from Dot Jarlett, John Lennon's housekeeper during the 1960's at his property 'Kenwood' in Weybridge, Surrey. The affidavit states that "...items were given to me for my Son by the late JOHN LENNON and amongst these was a Spanish Hat worn on the cover of his book 'A Spaniard in the Works'".

A Spaniard in the Works is Lennon's second foray into the realm of experimental fiction, and like his previous effort In His Own Write, combined absurd nonsense tales and anecdotes with simple drawings. The humor involved is trademark Lennon, as is the volume's cover photo which features a cloaked John holding a wrench and wearing this "Spanish"-style hat. A truly exceptional piece.

Provenance: Sotheby's London, Rock & Roll Memorabilia 1955-1984 Sale, August 30, 1984, ex lot 342.
