Janis Joplin - Original Handwritten Lyrics for the Song "Can't Be The Only One" (1967). Written in black ink on the back of an invitation "Big Brother is Holding their 2nd annual Christmas Party / Monday, December 25...At Sokol Hall". Comprising fifteen lines:"Can't be the only one
babe to cry at night (2)
No matter how many people
weepin, cryin in the nightime -
still don't make it right
Too much sadness - too much
sadness in the world (2)
So I'll add my part, take this
lonely heart -
from one lonely girl
Reachin' too high babe can't help
from getting burned (2)
25 years of sorrow & tears I
would think by now I'd
think you would have learned"
Measures 11" x 8.5". In Very Good condition. Invitation flyer shows some wear and restoration to a tear, though the handwriting is clear and unaffected.
"Can't Be The Only One" was never released by Big Brother or Joplin, though the song appears on the 2011 Global Recording Artists CD of the same name by The Dave Getz Breakaway with Kathi McDonald, included here. A photograph of these handwritten lyrics are reproduced in the liner notes.
Provenance: The Dave Getz Collection.
More Information:
Originally a painter and Jazz drummer, Dave Getz joined Psychedelic Rock pioneers Big Brother & the Holding Company early in their storied career, helping forge their classic sound with his hard-driving, bluesy percussion. He performed on both the band's self-titled debut and their landmark offering, Cheap Thrills, as well as later post-Janis albums. The influence of Getz and his bandmates on the popular music landscape of the time cannot be overstated. Here we offer several pieces of Big Brother memorabilia from his personal collection, never before offered at auction anywhere.
