Janis Joplin - A Set of Handwritten Lyrics for the Song "Easy Once You Know How" (circa 1968). Thirty lines written in blue ink on two sides of a sheet of off-white paper, with the working title "Much Too Early":

"O well its much too early, not
right now how can I love you
    when I don't know how
    don't know how (2)

How can I trust my eyes can they really see
What is the truth - it's hard for me hard for me (2)

It's hard to understand what's / really there
When all my hopes they just cloud the air
    cloud the air (2)

Love is all around us if we understand
Easy to say babe - don't demand
Love is all around us if we could be free
    " " " " " " just try and see

You say you need me babe as you breathe
the words that its time for you to leave
    Time to leave (2)

Oh please don't push me baby I might leave
    Now its your turn
    Its your turn (2)

I'd love to love you how can I be sure
That this time your love won't hurt me more
    Hurt me more (2)

But does it really matter when I need you so
& does it really matter tell me yes or
    & " " " matter

Sheet measures 8" x 10", and is in Good condition, with heavy toning, staining/soiling, handling wear, and two areas of loss at the bottom corners, resulting in a bit of missing text.

Though the song was written by the entire band, these lyrics were written out by Joplin herself, and Big Brother's Dave Getz believes the lyrics are "mostly reflective of Janis' ideas and writing style". "Easy Once You Know How" has at this time only been released as a studio outtake on the five-disc set Box of Pearls: The Janis Joplin Collection. Provenance: The Dave Getz Collection.

    More Information:

Originally a painter and Jazz drummer, Dave Getz joined Psychedelic Rock pioneers Big Brother & the Holding Company early in their storied career, helping forge their classic sound with his hard-driving, bluesy percussion. He performed on both the band's self-titled debut and their landmark offering, Cheap Thrills, as well as later post-Janis albums. The influence of Getz and his bandmates on the popular music landscape of the time cannot be overstated. Here we offer several pieces of Big Brother memorabilia from his personal collection, never before offered at auction anywhere.
