Buddy Holly / Jerry Lee Lewis / Chuck Berry / Alan Freed 1958 Private Concert Movie & Ephemera.
A very rare eight-minute private home movie shot in Flint, Michigan in 1958 - without sound, but in color - of Alan Freed's "Big Beat" tour featuring a bevvy of rock 'n' roll hall-of-fame musicians. Rather than eight continuous minutes, this is comprised of many snippets of varying length. The lighting is dark, but when in the spotlight the headliners are very obvious, and it's a thrill to watch the world's first phase of rock stars work their craft over 60 years ago.

The best quality shots are of Buddy Holly (about 55 seconds), Frankie Lymon cutting some James Brown moves (20 seconds), Jerry Lee Lewis pounding the piano in a bright red stage suit (20 seconds) and blonde singer Jo Ann Campbell entertaining the audience in a tight dress. The lighting is darker for Chuck Berry, but in his 40 seconds you can definitely make out his famous duck walk and other moves. Various other musicians on the bill are seen here & there, creating a fun game of trying to "name that star."

The movie was found by a relative of the deceased attendee/filmmaker, and it's assumed, as far as we know, that none of it has ever been seen or published before. It was all shot from what appears to be a balcony seat near stage right. The film comes in its original can, along with a burned DV-R for ease of viewing. A very special find!

This lot includes two ancillary items tied to the event: the concert program, featuring 13 pages of pictures and short write-ups. Measures 9" x 11.8" and in Good condition with handwriting on the cover and on the page devoted to Larry Williams. Also, an original newspaper advertisement for this concert from The Saginaw News. Newspaper is folded, and in Good condition. (A simple color photocopy of the original advertising handbill for this very show is also included for good measure and great reference.) COA from Heritage Auctions.
