    Beatles Yesterday and Today Sealed Livingston First State Mono "Butcher Cover" LP (Capitol T 2553, 1966). Sealed "first state" Butcher Covers are a highly-coveted treasure, and this example is a beauty! Released on July 20, 1966 by Capitol Records,Yesterday and Today was the ninth US Beatles release from the company, its title given based on the inclusion of the hit "Yesterday." As was often the case with Capitol, the album was a mish-mash of songs from several other releases, and has no British counterpart whatsoever. Two cuts were from the UK pressing of Help!; four were culled from UK version of their previous LP, the ground-breaking Rubber Soul; both sides of the single "Day Tripper"/"We Can Work it Out" are included; and finally three songs from their then yet-to-be-released Revolver album. The Beatles resented how their US record company did this as they always put a lot of thought and effort into the tracks and order on all their UK albums. The (in)famous "butcher" photo was taken early in 1966 by Robert Whitaker and actually had a title: A Somnambulant Adventure. Whether or not it was a Vietnam protest, a protest against Capitol "butchering" their records, or something else entirely, the negative response to the photograph was swift and severe when it became the official cover for the album. It was hated by DJs, record store employees, and the public at large. Capitol recalled all the "offensive" albums and, in many cases, glued what's generally called the "Trunk Cover" over it (known as a "second state"). The original albums that were saved from destruction or the glue-over process, such as this one, are known as being "first state," and are immensely rare. Record pressing plant code on the reverse is "6" indicating that it was produced at the Indianapolis, Indiana plant. Condition: GM-MT 10 (still sealed, with a large double air-hole in the shrink on the verso, with two air-holes on the front).

    The reason for the wonderful condition of this particular LP is that it's one of the highly-sought "Livingston" copies, and includes a signed letter from former Capitol Records president Alan W. Livingston, which reads as follows:

    "June 22, 1992

    To Whom It May Concern;
    From 1962 to 1968 I was President of Capitol Records, Inc. During that period I signed the Beatles. At the time that The Beatles Yesterday and Today "butcher album" cover was prepared, and a decision made not to release it, the first box of records off the press at our record pressing plant was given to me. They have been kept in their original sealed condition, without exposure of any kind. The Beatles "butcher album" you have acquired from me is from this original supply.
    [signed] Alan Livingston
