Beatles Related - A Bagism Performance Bag From Yoko Ono, circa late 1960s. John and Yoko publicly introduced the concept of Bagism at a March 1969 press conference in Vienna, although they'd appeared in a bag performance piece in late 1968 at an artists gathering held at the Royal Albert Hall. Ono's background in performance art predated her involvement with Lennon - she'd been involved with the New York art scene since the early 1960s, and had received great attention for Cut Piece, which she debuted in 1964 and famously performed at Carnegie Hall in 1965. And while Cut Piece hinged on the removal of the clothing which covers one's body, Bagism literally involved wearing a bag over one's entire body to shade the individual from any preconceptions based on race, gender, appearance, etc. By doing so, the idea was that "pure communication" could be achieved.

This very rare lot is a black cotton bag which came to it's original owner through Yoko Ono, likely in the late 1960s. The owner attended a party also attended by Ono and expressed interest in acquiring one of her bags for the purpose of meditation, which was later arranged and the bag delivered. It is in Excellent condition, sewn on three sides and without tags or labels, and measuring 67" x 51". Includes a letter of provenance from the original owner who obtained the bag through Ono.

    Provenance: Christie's Pop Memorabilia Sale 4388; London, 29 August 1991; Lot 556
