Description

Beatles - A Very Rare Group of Items from the Indra, Kaiserkeller, and Bambi-Kino (Hamburg, 1960s). When the Beatles first arrived in Hamburg, Germany, on August 17, 1960, no arrangements had been confirmed advance for accommodations, and ended up in very rough conditions in the back of a small cinema known as Bambi-Kino. Bruno Koschmider, the clubowner who booked them into the Indra and then the Kaiserkeller, operated all three venues

The collection contains ten items collected from three of the earliest sites The Beatles played or inhabited during their years in Hamburg. From the Bambi Kino, The Beatles' residence when they arrived in Hamburg, a 16" x 23.25" poster for the Swedish film, The Sadist.

From the Kaiserkeller, the "Dance Palace for the Youth," comes a box of matches and a letter of provenance by William "Faron" Ruffley, a Liverpool musician who joined Gerry & the Pacemakers on their trip to Hamburg in 1961. He writes, "In July 1961 I was playing with Gerry and the Pacemakers in Hamburg at the Top Ten Club. I was taken by Stewart [sic] Sutcliffe, who had just left the Beatles; and Tony Sheridan to the 'Kaiserkeller' Club just to see where the Beatles first playing in Germany. For a souvenir I took this box of matches as a memory of this occasion. This is that original box containing the original matches. As far as I know this is the only one left in the world. . . . There are four matches used from the Box, one to light Tony's one to light Stu's and two to light my own."

The majority of items come from the Indra, a cabaret club featuring strip shows. The Indra closed in in late 1960 after noise complaints, prompting The Beatles' move to the larger Kaiserkeller. Included are six advertisements for shows, one a program for a show dated February 1956, and two of which are photographic reprints. Also, one unused letter sheet featuring the letterhead of Bruno Koschmider and a later print photograph of The Beatles, taken at the Indra on their first night in Hamburg. From the Uwe Blaschke Beatles Collection.
