Description

Beatles - A Group of Items from the Top Ten Club, With Multiple Signatures Including Tony Sheridan and Peter Eckhorn (Hamburg, 1960s). A fascinating look at the early days of rock & roll on the Reeperbahn, this lot consists of ephemera, pay records, artist cards and salary receipts, photographs, etc., from the club where the Beatles were "discovered" by Bert Kaempfert in 1961 - leading to the "My Bonnie" recording sessions with Tony Sheridan, with whom the shared the bill. It was during their time at the Top Ten, in the Spring and Summer of 1961 that the Beatles were introduced to Prellies, and were most engaged in the "sex, drugs, and rock & roll" behavior that Hamburg afforded them, which has become ingrained into their legend.
Included are: a vintage drink card and artist opening announcement, both Near Mint; original letterhead and artist cards, correspondence to the club by artists, documents signed by owner Peter Eckhorn, etc., most in a bound notebook compiled by Uwe Blaschke, all Very Good or better. Of particular note are five weekly salary sheet receipts dating to July through September 1960, for the band The Jets. This London group, featuring Sheridan, was the first English group to arrive in Hamburg in June 1960. The Jets played for about one month at Bruno Koschmider's Kaiserkeller, before Eckhorn poached them away to the Top Ten. The receipt for their very first week at the Top Ten, July 9-15, 1960, is included, with the signatures of Sheridan and his bandmates, which included over the next few months Colin Crawley, Rick Hardy, Ian Hines, Tony Ward, Peter Wharton, Tony Cavanaugh, James Macken and Chas Beaumont. Sheridan's signature appears on three of the five pay receipts which are included. Approximately 50 items altogether, forming a very interesting archive of a club which was crucial to the launch of the Beatles. From the Uwe Blaschke Beatles Collection.
