Beatles - A Group of Erotic Entertainment Materials from the St. Pauli District, (Hamburg, circa 1960s). The Hamburg to which the young Beatles arrived in the late Summer of 1960 was centered in the nightclubs of St. Pauli, many of which offered adult entertainment that would not be found in other parts of Hamburg - or at all in most European cities. Hamburg was and is a major shipping port, and St. Pauli was often full of sailors on shore leave. It was natural that sex, along with alcohol, would be a prominent part of the nightlife offerings. The first club the Beatles played, the Indra, was a transvestite cabaret before shifting to live rock & roll music with the Beatles arrival.
Here is a fascinating group of postcards, advertisements, drink menus, guidebooks, etc. - 27 items in all - which provide a peek into the establishments of Hamburg's erotic world. Most are written entirely in German, some with racy photos and drawings. Of particular note is a drink coaster from the Erotic-Film-Night-Club, at 39 Grosse Freiheit, which was operated by Manfred Weissleder above his Star-Club, and a flier advertising the celebrity appearance at the striptease club Tabu by Mandy Rice-Davies, the showgirl who was famously involved in the Profumo Affair, which discredited the administration of Prime Minister Harold Macmillan in 1963. Most in Very Good or better condition consistent with age, various sizes. From the Uwe Blaschke Beatles Collection.
