Description

A Group of Five Beatles Dishware Items by Washington Pottery (UK, 1963). Washington Pottery of Hanley (Staffordshire) held the exclusive worldwide license for Beatles dishware, and manufactured this very popular series of transferware items for several years, as well as a later series with designs from The Beatles cartoon series. The Beatles appear here in light blue collarless suits, and are rearranged from an early Dezo Hoffman group photo shoot - the chairback which John holds in those photos cleverly reimagined as a guitar neck on the dishware! High quality yet moderately priced in its day, the Washington series is quite rare today due to the fragility of the items. Included in this lot are five individual items: a 7" diameter plate, a 7" diameter biscuit plate, a 4" high coffee mug, and two 6.5" diameter bowls. Condition: the plate and biscuit plate both Very Good, images bold and minor imperfections on the bottoms; the coffee mug Good, a chip on the rim above John's head and some craquelure and staining at the bottom; the bowls both Fair, one with a small hairline crack from center to edge through George's left side, and one with the autographs and lower image portions deeply faded, the Washington transfer mark on the underside also rubbed off. From the Uwe Blaschke Beatles Collection.
