A Charming Group of 80 German Lebkuchen Labels Featuring the Beatles (Germany, 1964). A traditional gift for a loved one in Germany, lebkuchen (gingerbread) is a small cake which is often fashioned into a heart shape with icing applied to form a message of affection. Bakeries will sometimes offer lebkuchen with decorative paper labels, and in the wake of Beatlemania, a clever baker came up with an idea that undoubtedly sold a lot of the cakes - heart-shaped lebkuchen labels featuring the Beatles! Here is a large group of unused labels (80 in all) from the early 1960s, all still in Mint condition. There are two designs, with three different messages: George and Ringo with a young girl, "Sie liebt dich / jeah, jeah, jeah" (15) ; the same image with a different message "Wir wollen Freunde sein fur's ganze Leben" (We want to be friends for all our lives) (35); and an image of Paul beating a heart-shaped drum "Es macht bum bum vor Liebesschmerz - Du weisst, warum - Es ist mein?" (It goes boom boom with longing - You know why - Is it mine?) (30). Included is an actual German lebkuchen with one more label applied, which was exhibited at Beatlemania Hamburg. (The cake is of unknown age and origin, and should not be eaten.) From the Uwe Blaschke Beatles Collection.
