Lowell Fulson's Twice-Signed 1965 Cherry Red Gibson ES 335 Guitar and Signed Concert Poster. A winner of the Pioneer Award from the Rhythm and Blues Foundation, Lowell Fulson (1921-1999) was a hugely influential Bluesman whose career spanned more than 60 years and whose songs were covered by such luminaries as Elvis Presley and Eric Clapton ("Reconsider Baby," in 1960 and 1994, respectively). Along with T-Bone Walker, Fulson was primarily responsible for the Blues style popular on the West Coast during the late 1940s and 1950s. During the early '50s, Fulson's touring band included Ray Charles (then in the infancy of his incredible career) and saxophonist Stanley Turrentine (then just a teenager).
This Gibson ES 335, serial number 8656890, which Fulson used to write and record his biggest hit, "Tramp" (for Kent Records), in 1965, is a superb working piece of Blues history. It is signed "Lowell Fulson" in silver paint pen on both front and back. The guitar is accompanied by a c.1965 concert poster advertising Lowell "Mr. Tramp" Fulsom (a spelling he sometimes used) and His Revue performing at Esther's Orbit Room in Oakland, California, boldly signed by the Bluesman. Also included is a folder of information proving the absolute authenticity of the guitar: an August 1997 (laminated) typed and signed affidavit from Fulson himself; and photos showing him playing and signing the guitar. Fulson lavished great care on this superb guitar, which is in Very Fine condition, with the expected dings, scratches, and tiny paint cracks achieved from 32 years of playing the Blues. Accompanied by a COA from PSA/DNA.
