    Description

Johnny Cash's Personally-Owned Bauer Parlor Guitar, Circa 1890s, Completely Restored by Danny Ferrington, with Extra Top Originally Made by Cash. Serial Number 30928 carved at end of the peghead and "75" carved on the back. A beautiful instrument of the "parlor" style, 13.5" across the lower bout, 9.5" across the upper bout, 8" at the waist, and 38.75" in overall length. rosewood back and sides, spruce top, ebony fingerboard with exotic pearl inlays, mahogany neck, and a classical-style bound and slotted headstock with three on plate tuners and additional pearl inlays. There is elaborate carving on the heel and part of the way down the neck. The ivory bound body is decorated with abalone purfling on the top and soundhole. The original George Bauer label is found inside. Bauer was a master luthier who plied his trade in Philadelphia from the late 1880s until his death in 1910. Part of that time, he was in partnership with S. S. Stewart, the famed banjo-maker. His instruments are considered to be some of the most finely-crafted of the era. Included with the guitar is a roughly-finished top originally made for this guitar by Johnny Cash himself; he was planning on doing the restoration personally (see explanation below). Fine condition with modern hardshell case.

Danny Ferrington tells the back story on this fabulous instrument: "Johnny Cash's son-in-law brought this to me when I was still in Nashville, 1979 or so. He said he was at John's house and found this in a closet. It had no finish, no tuners, no fretboard, and the top was obviously made by someone who didn't know what they were doing and had got half through with it. It had no rosette and no binding on top and it was smeared with glue, very sloppy. He said can you do anything with this? It was going to cost a lot to restore so I wanted to talk to John about it before I did the work. Years passed, I moved to Los Angeles in 1980, kept it on the shelf, took off the old top and made a new one ready to put on. Then, after my book came out around 1992 or 93, went to see John & Waylon; they were at Ocean Way Recording Studio in L.A. with Don Was doing the second Highwayman record with Kris Kristofferson and Willie Nelson. June was there, too. I told John about the Bauer and the poorly-made top. I told him it looked as if someone had made it with a chainsaw and a hatchet. He looked down at me and said, "Danny, I did that." Well, talk about foot in mouth. I said John, I'm so sorry. He said, "No, no, you're right. I didn't know what I was doing, I thought I could do it but I couldn't." I said well what should I do, it needs everything. It will cost more than it might be worth. He said, "You can have it." So, I did the inlays like the original in the headstock, put ebony truss rod in it. It's a killer guitar now, and to my knowledge, the only guitar building Johnny Cash ever did. Pretty cool. The guitar is signed and dated inside the top."
