    Description

John Coltrane, Dizzy Gillespie 1961 Hamburg, Germany Concert Poster. An original large paper concert poster for two jazz legends appearing in Hamburg, Germany for a pair of shows on Saturday evening, November 25, 1961. Both saxophonist John Coltrane and trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie are pictured on the poster, a huge plus. All the bells and whistles are here: "Norman Granz Presents Jazz at the Philharmonic 1961," it states. Support musicians are also sometimes mentioned, such as Eric Dolphy on alto sax, Elvin Jones on drums and Leo Wright on both alto sax and flute.

The concerts took place at the Musikhalle (Music Hall) in Hamburg, which was home to the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra and is still functioning under another name. There are various-sized halls inside the venue, and these shows took place at the Musikhalle's larger room.

Any poster featuring John Coltrane is very exciting, and one with him image on there, too, is rare and amazing. He's almost always listed just by name, such as with our 1962 Copenhagen, Denmark poster last auction (which sold for $5,000). This beauty has a serene image of a pensive Trane, and is backed up by an action shot of Diz in concert. It's an exhilarating one-two punch for jazz fans.

And the year of 1961 was magical for Trane, due to the critical and commercial success of his album My Favorite Things on Atlantic Records. The title track was even a hit single (of sorts, certainly for a jazz musician) which garnered the sax great lots of additional exposure on AM radio. Decades later, the LP received the Grammy Hall of Fame Award.

Measures 32 3/4" x 23" and grades to Very Good Plus condition. COA from Heritage Auctions.

More Information: Poster was once factory-folded down into eighths, surely for mailing upon the initial printing. As such, the folds are very neat, break no color and don't even detract from its appearance. The creases did create a small seam split in one place: on the far left center edge, the ¾" split goes into the "M" of "Musikhalle." There's also a small quarter-inch edge tear above "Norman." The verso is also slightly toned with age. Otherwise the poster presents as never used.
