    Description

Jimi Hendrix / Janis Joplin / The Who / Otis Redding 1967 Monterey Pop Festival Poster (AOR-3.5) Original small format poster printed on foil stock, designed by Tom Wilkes and sold as a souvenir at the seminal music festival from June 16-18, 1967. Some of them may have been used for advance advertising as well.

Many music fans and historians consider this to be the greatest weekend in rock-music history, even eclipsing Woodstock two years later. Officially kicking off the Summer of Love, the weekend's talent line-up was simply stunning, most notably for launching the careers of Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Otis Redding, all of whom put on spellbinding performances. The long weekend also featured performances by the Grateful Dead, The Who, Jefferson Airplane, the Mamas and the Papas, Eric Burdon and the Animals, Buffalo Springfield, Simon & Garfunkel, the Butterfield Blues Band, Quicksilver Messenger Service, The Byrds, Laura Nyro and even sitarist extraordinaire Ravi Shankar. And we've left out a good number of others. It was all captured in a theatrical motion picture by D.A. Pennebaker, immortalizing the weekend forever.

Measures 12 1/4 x 21 1/4" and grades to Very Good condition. Has several creases in the foil paper across the top, including a tiny loss of the paper above the "n" in "June." Three of the creases touch harmlessly into the purple area. Upper left and right corners are dinged with tiny foil loss as well (upper right has a crease). The bottom margin is in much better shape, with only one tiny corner bump. Blue lettering has one long indentation line and a couple of indentation marks in it; such is the nature of the foil paper used. Verso is perfect. COA from Heritage Auctions.
