    Description

Janis Joplin Signed Document- Her Resignation Letter as Director and Vice President of Big Brother & The Holding Company, September 7, 1968. One 8.5" x 11" typed page on plain paper, addressed to "Big Brother & The Holding Company" at their San Francisco address, reading as follows:

"Gentlemen: I hereby tender my resignation as a Director and Vice President of Big Brother & The Holding Company to be effective this date [September 7, 1968]. Sincerely, [signed] Janis Joplin JANIS JOPLIN"

The date of this letter was the day after a show at the Hollywood Bowl with Iron Butterfly and just before their September 12-14 Fillmore West concerts that were advertised as Janis and the band's last San Francisco dates. (That turned out to be untrue as they did play a Family Dog benefit at the Avalon in San Francisco on December 1.) This official letter was a formality as the band was internally aware of her desire to quit Big Brother and form her own band for a month or more. The public announcement was made about a week before. Janis had been with the band since June 1966 and the reasons given for her departure vary depending on who you ask. The "official" reason was that she wanted to go solo and form a soul music band. Other opinions cite lack of musicianship, financial arrangements, direction, and artistic differences as the driving reasons. She said in an interview at the time: "I love those guys more than anybody else in the world. But if I had any serious idea of myself as a musician, I had to leave. Getting off, real feeling, like Otis Redding had, like Tina Turner, that's the whole thing of music for me." For whatever the reasons for the split-up, many would agree that Janis was never as forceful or as powerful a performer after Big Brother as she was while with the band. In any regard, this is a museum-worthy piece of Rock history. Three hole-punched, Very Fine condition.

    Provenance:The Dave Getz Collection.

    More Information:

Originally a painter and Jazz drummer, Dave Getz joined Psychedelic Rock pioneers Big Brother & the Holding Company early in their storied career, helping forge their classic sound with his hard-driving, bluesy percussion. He performed on both the band's self-titled debut and their landmark offering, Cheap Thrills, as well as later post-Janis albums. The influence of Getz and his bandmates on the popular music landscape of the time cannot be overstated. Here we offer several pieces of Big Brother memorabilia from his personal collection, never before offered at auction anywhere.
