    Description

LOOKS LIKE GARY COLEMAN OR RODNEY ALLEN RIPPY!

James Brown 1959 Amazingly Young "Dance & Show" Boxing-Style Concert Poster. A terrifically early James Brown concert-advertising window card from 1959, when all that Mr. Dynamite had to his credit were the two hits "Please, Please, Please" and "Try Me." The photo of James and the simplicity of the layout say it all: This is when he was just starting out. There was certainly no hint of a "revue" yet.

Measures 14" x 22" and in Very Good condition. COA from Heritage Auctions.

More Information: A very quaint design by the Tilghman ("till-man") Poster Press Co. out of Oakland, CA, featuring a big musical note right in the middle. As was commonly done, this is a one-attraction concert poster but made to look like two by taking James' bandleader, J.C. Davis, and giving his name big play and presenting a photo of him. Yes, Davis warmed up the crowd before Brown strode on stage, but it was hardly two different acts.

This was a "tour blank" concert poster, and Topeka, Kansas was about as far east as the Tilghman company went with their work. Admission $2.00 per person, with the promoter not choosing to list ticket-buying locations, although there was certainly room.

Speaking of having room, Brown had hit #5 R&B with "Please, Please, Please" in 1956, which the poster humorously abbreviates, although they certainly had the room to throw one more "Please" in there (or three more, for that matter). He then went 2 ½ years without a charting record, much less a hit, and then scored again in late '58 with "Try Me." His only other success up to now was the Top 20 R&B hit "I Want You So Bad" from the spring of '59. But instead the poster plugged "I Got to Change," a single which went nowhere.

Condition details: Heavy restoration to the poster's front, which was once quite damaged. Verso shows many small marks where some of the resto took place. All corners have rounding and small bumps. Very toned throughout.
