THE SAN FRANCISCO SOUND HITS SAN ANTONE

Grateful Dead 1970 San Antonio, TX Psychedelic Concert Poster. An original thick-paper advertising poster for the Grateful Dead, Quicksilver Messenger Service, John Mayall and It's a Beautiful Day in concert at the Convention Center in San Antonio, Texas on Saturday, February 21, 1970.

This rare and unusual poster features what we're going to call magenta printing on blue-gray parchment stock, although others may have slightly different colors in mind, such as light purple or pink on a silver-ish background. Regardless, it's an unusual color combo, and an unusual location for two headlining San Francisco bands to be playing fresh in the new decade. Texas Optics is credited with the design.

San Antone radio station KTSA is listed at the top, the year "1970" is given with a peace sign, and a Jewish star is depicted by John Mayall's name. Most of the poster resembles a Rorschach test taken right out of a light show right at the Fillmore.

Printing gets normal at the bottom to explain that tickets were priced from $3.00 to $6.00, and available at record stores and the box office.

February 1970 was the exact month the Grateful Dead recorded their classic album Workingman's Dead, at Pacific High Studios in San Francisco. And this show followed by one week the group's legendary three-night stand at New York's Fillmore East, which many fans consider to be their peak live performances ever.

It was a stellar time for Quicksilver, as well, with the best-selling album of their career, Shady Grove, having just entered the charts a month earlier. Why stop now? The best-selling album of John Mayall's career, USA Union, was also released this year; and It's a Beautiful Day were still touring off their self-titled debut album, featuring "White Bird," still very much on the Billboard album chart.

You'll see a handbill once in a while for this show, but almost never the poster, and this is certainly the first time Heritage has ever offered one. Measures 17" x 22" and grades to Very Good Plus condition. COA from Heritage Auctions.

More Information: This is a mint poster, but must be graded Very Good Plus due to its upper right edge, which is a little bit ragged and uneven due to bumping, possibly shipping, perhaps bug bites, or something that got to the upper right edge and left a few little tiny bits of paper missing. There's even extra toning in this spot as well, again all relegated to only the very edge, meaning it would frame out instantly with even the slightest mat.

The thick parchment paper is hearty and the rest of the poster is beautiful and unused, and was not framed but kept rolled up in a tube for decades by our consignor, who attended the show. So the poster does have a strong "rolled memory" right now and must be held down with corner weights in order to examine.

The upper left corner tip does have an infinitesimal amount of the paper missing. The lower left corner has the slightest bump to it, and also tiny edge creasing to the right of it. As for the artwork, it's completely untouched and we couldn't find any flaws even when tilting the poster at an angle to the light. The verso does have a small dot of white paint or something down in the corner.
