    Description

Fats Waller Vintage 1930's Tour Blank Concert Poster. An original cardboard "tour blank" window card for the legendary Fats Waller, used throughout the 1930's. As with any tour blank, this version with the orange color was printed in quantity ahead of time, leaving the top space blank. Local promoters would then have their own shows' details filled in up top. Notice it says "Victor Records" below his name; Fats was on Victor from 1929-1938, at which point he switched over to RCA's Bluebird label. Measures 13 7/8" x 22" and grades to repaired Very Good Plus condition. COA from Heritage Auctions.

More Information: Born in 1904, Fats Waller studied piano diligently as a boy, turning professional at age 15. During the 1920's, he accompanied Bessie Smith and other blues singers in cabarets and theaters. By the late 1920's Waller began composing popular tunes, including songs for the 1928 Broadway review, Connie's Hot Chocolates. In 1934, Waller made a series of recordings for RCA Victor that became his legacy. Many of these were satirical tunes, and his happy-go-lucky manner and comical lyrics made him a huge hit. By 1943, Fats had gone to Hollywood to make films, and was on the verge of international success. On a train trip going back to New York City, Mr. Waller died. When the train made a stop in Chicago, authorities found his body in a stateroom filled with empty liquor bottles. Some of his most memorable tunes, including "Honeysuckle Rose," "Ain't Misbehavin'," "Jitterbug Waltz" and "Blue, Turning Gray Over You," are still favorites of musicians today. (Thank you to Jazz & Big Band expert Larry Rafferty for background.)

Condition details: Poster once had a lot of surface dirt and grime, which has been expertly and painstakingly removed by Chameleon Restoration. Three of the four corners have also been mended, but no material was ever missing from the board. There was also a four-inch diagonal repair done thru Fats' ear which is only visible on the verso, and likewise some edge repair in that area. General toning throughout.
