Description

USS Arizona Memorial Fund/Elvis Concert Document Archive Group. Not long after leaving the Army, Elvis heard about the plight of a group attempting to fund a memorial to the USS Arizona, which was bombed and sunk during the raid on Pearl Harbor with more than one thousand U.S. sailors entombed inside. Unable to raise enough funds to complete the memorial, the story of the Navy group's efforts was picked up by newspapers of Hawaii, and the story spread to the mainland, where Elvis picked up on it. He and Colonel Tom Parker planned a fund-raising concert, which was held on March 25, 1961. This hefty file folder comes from famed bandleader Al Dvorin (the man who coined the famous phrase "Elvis has left the building"), who was the producer for the show. It contains the collected receipts, contracts for musicians, and other paperwork from that legendary show, plus sample stage direction pages from an earlier Memphis concert, a lapel ribbon marked "Official Elvis Presley Show" and letters from Colonel Parker's office. Approximately 84 items, averaging Very Good condition. From the Al Dvorin Archive.
