Description

The Who- John Entwistle's Handwritten Notebooks, Postcard to his Mother, Receipts, and other Personal Memorabilia. A goldmine of private material for the Entwistle or Who fan, an incredible look into the life and intimate thoughts of this great musician, judged by many as the greatest Rock bassist of all time. Items included are as follows: (1) A "Black n' Red" spiral-bound notebook with lined pages containing many diverse notes and "to do" lists. Most important is a detailed summary of the financial ownership breakdown for The Who's Tommy. One page titled "In Reality" shows the percentages for the Who members: Pete (55.25%), John (9.26%), Roger (5.805%), and Keith's estate (3.94%). Another interesting entry is a note about upcoming Nirvana concerts on the 17th and 18th in Brixton. These were almost certainly two concerts in April 1994 (thus dating the book) originally scheduled for April 3rd and 4th but rescheduled after Kurt Cobain's coma while on tour the month before. Cobain would die before the concerts could be made up. (2) Entwistle's 1992 deluxe-bound day planner with brief notes on many pages such as Rehearsal, Writing, Off, Overdubs, etc. Some longer notes on Post-Its inserted. (3) A paper-bound 2001/2002 day planner with phone/address section at back. John has filled out the owner's section at the front and added Lisa Pritchett Johnson's name. A very poignant entry by Lisa is found on July 10, 2002. It reads, in full: "John's Funeral/ St. Edwards Church 2:00 PM/ Stow-on-the-Wold/ Crematorium Cheltenham/ Fosse Manor/ Quarwood/ A Great Man, Soulmate/ Lover & Best friend; Plus/ the best bass guitarist/ ever. God, I'll miss you but/ never ever forget the priviledge/ of having loved laughed and known/ such as man! I love you baby." (4) A lined refill pad with the first two pages, in his handwriting, listing various episodes and included songs of the popular and hilarious BBC comedy Only Fools and Horses. Page one has episodes "With Grandad"; page two "With Uncle Albert". One other page of random notes, the rest blank. (5) A loose-leaf A4 size binder with lined pages, approximately eighteen pages bearing his handwritten notes on various subjects- "to call" lists, wardrobe planning for a U.S. tour, lists of equipment, and two very cool pages titled "Hot Licks Video List." In those two pages, he lists twenty-two points illustrating many of his brilliant bass methods- tapping, harmonics tapping, pulling, slapping, octave sharing, etc. Point 20 is hilarious: "Jokes-in case of mistakes 'That was a mistake I picked up from Paul McCartney'" (6) A two page handwritten story on the back of a Fax. It starts: "Little Joe was born deaf dumb and blind! His great ambition was to be a ventriloquist." It gets funnier (and quite rude) from there. (7) Several pages of tour notes dated 1994 and 1999 along with a one-page poem. (8) A handwritten postcard to his mother, Mrs. Q[ueenie] M[aud] Johns with revealing content, in part: "Dear Mum Having a sh*tty time wish I wasn't here... Who- 5 concerts down - 11 to go! Lisa home soon- me not home soon enough -John. Feel Better!" Based on content, this was likely written in late April, 1997. Also included are: three credit card receipts dated 1996-2000, two actually signed and a 1998-dated contract for a time share in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, signed by Entwistle and Lisa Johnson at close and initialed by both numerous times. An amazing and historic lot with much important content. Items generally in Very Fine to Excellent condition. From the John Entwistle Estate.
