Description

Elvis Presley Personal Appearance Contract, a Gag from Colonel Tom Parker to MGM Press Agent Howard Strickling (Circa 1957). The top area of this three section, one-page contract shows a large image of the King in performance with the printed text above: "Personal Appearance Contract, Elvis Presley, The Nation's Only Atomic Powered Singer". The lower section bears standard printed boilerplate text with humorous details filled in by typewriter. Drawn up as a joke by Parker at the expense of the MGM Studio head of publicity (and "fixer") Howard Strickling. MGM was the studio that produced the most Elvis films - twelve in total - beginning in 1957 with Jailhouse Rock. Overall size is 8.75" x 36.5" with numerous photos surrounding the lower section. Very Good condition with a horizontal fold and light wear and soiling. Includes a Certificate of Authenticity from the archive of the Estate of Elvis Presley at Graceland.

Just a bit of the humor contained is as follows: "Personal Appearance Contract between Col. Thomas A. Parker for the services of ELVIS PRESLEY (party of the first part) and Colonel Howard Strickling (party of the unimportant part), press agent for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures, the stuffed-lion studio... ELVIS PRESLEY, who does not have to be present if he doesn't want to, but who must nevertheless receive his full compensation... Col. Parker reserves the right at all times, 24 hours a day, to examine Col. Strickling's books, brief cases, wallets, safety deposit boxes, checking accounts, savings accounts, and deep freezer, to see if he is holding back any of the receipts that come in from this show... All notices pertaining to this contract must be typed in capital letters, and copies made in Braille... The following commodities must be advertised as being available at Colonel Parker's Farm: Shetland ponies, ducks, chickens, frogs, rabbits, Tennessee hams and bacon..."
