Description

Chet Baker - Promotional Material from Let's Get Lost and a Baker Owned and Worn Jacket From the Film. The great fashion photographer Bruce Weber set out to make a documentary on Chet Baker in 1987, shortly before Chet's death in 1988, and the resulting film has cemented how Chet will always be remembered. By juxtaposing photos and film from Chet's early career in the 1950s and 60s with new footage and interviews with Chet's personal and professional acquaintances, an incredible story unfolds, with a visual impact that is at times both beautiful and harrowing. Let's Get Lost is perhaps the most important component of the legacy of Chet Baker, and the film was nominated for both an 1989 Academy Award for Best Feature Documentary and the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance the same year. It won the Cinecritica Award at the Venice Film Festival in 1988, and an IDA Award from the International Documentary Association in 1989.
The items in this lot come from the collection of Diane Vavra, who was Chet's longtime companion and who appears extensively in Let's Get Lost. There is an original publicity kit, including cast and production credit sheets, a booklet of press review clippings and other information, and a set of 8.5" x 11" promotional glossy photographs -- six classic photos of Chet from the 1950s by William Claxton, and three then-contemporary photos of Chet taken by Bruce Weber. There is also an oversized commemorative photo book from the film, with dozens and dozens of fantastic photographs of Chet throughout his entire life -- most of which were not in the film -- beautifully presented with quotes by Chet and others. A personal note from Bruce Weber and the film's producer Nan Bush to Diane Vavra rounds out the printed material. Finally, one of the iconic items of clothing from the film is also included -- the Agnes B. black pullover zippered jacket worn by Chet during the outdoor scene with the paparazzi at the Cannes Film Festival, and during his indoor seated interview, also filmed at Cannes. A tremendous still image of Chet in the jacket from the Cannes interview graces both the front and back covers of the photo book. From the Diane Vavra Collection.
