    Description

Bob Dylan Rolling Thunder Revue 1976 Tour Documents & Paper Ephemera. A grouping of paper documents from Bob Dylan's 1976 Rolling Thunder Revue tour of America, as gathered by the tour's producer and our consignor, Louie Kemp. Numbering about 18 pieces in all, there are tour itineraries, personnel rosters, expense reports, correspondence and newspaper reviews of the second leg of Dylan's famous tour. Also included are two excellent photographs of Dylan with Louie Kemp. The B&W one was taken in 1972 and appears to be a vintage print. The color one (including Dylan and Kemp's other childhood friend, Larry Kegan, on the right) was taken on the occasion of Dylan's 50th birthday in 1991, and appears to be a seasoned print but its vintage cannot be stated.

Among the documents is a signed letter to Kemp from Bill Graham on his company stationery. On the personnel rosters, it's probably OK for us to leak this now: Mr. Kemp informs us that Dylan is code-named on one of the rosters as "Keefe Laundry" and the other as "Phil Bender," in both instances right under Lou's name.

There's also a fragment of a blue envelope that was printed up for the tour to deliver messages and keys to personnel by sliding it under their hotel-room doors. There's even a message scrawled "to Bob" from someone on the verso, probably a message that Kemp was to pass along to Dylan.

Most documents are in the area of the standard 8 ½" x 11" size; the
Spirit Valley receipts are 5 ½" x 8 ½". The B&W photo of Dylan and Kemp measures 5" x 7". The blue Rolling Thunder envelope fragment measures about 9 ½" in both directions. Newspaper clippings are all standard size, but comprise a very ramshackle gathering with the articles not cut out, but rather the whole page - or even section - intact.

In trying to grade these materials, this lot is not a 'condition play' at all. Many of the documents are folded, torn, toned from age, written on and so forth. The two photographs and the six-page itinerary are nice and clean, but everything else shows its age and more. The signed letter on Bill Graham Presents stationery was folded, has foxing, has writing on the back, is creased heavily, etc. And the newspapers were not preserved at all, they're very aged, yellowed and frayed at the edges.

Two items from this lot are pictured in Mr. Kemp's book, Dylan and Me - 50 Years of Adventures: The letter on Bill Graham Presents stationery (given a full page all to itself) and the December 22 Spirit Valley Ski & Sport receipt.

This lot includes a personally signed and inscribed copy of that book, made out to the winner, including a Dylan-ephemera bookmark that Louie designed. COAs from Louie Kemp and Heritage Auctions.

More Information: The 8" x 10" full-color photograph included in this lot shows Lou Kemp, Bob Dylan and Larry Kegan taken in 1991 on the occasion of Dylan's 50th birthday. These three friends were inseparable in their youth. Mr. Kemp tells us that he and Mr. Kegan were the only non-family members invited to this milestone birthday celebration of Dylan's.

And the smaller black & white photo, on original 1970's thick parchment paper and looking very original, was taken in the early 70's at a residence Dylan maintained on Long Island, New York. It is an outtake photo from the one that was picked for the book's cover.
