DescriptionBob Dylan: 1965 Newport Folk Festival Program and Ticket. This 8.5" x 11" program is comprised of sixty-three pages of stories, line-ups, photographs, and performer biographies. Notable musicians who played the July festival included Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Donovan, Peter, Paul, & Mary, the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Gordon Lightfoot, Pete Seeger, Bill Monroe & the Blue Grass Boys, and many others. With a 3.5" x 2.25" festival courtesy pass. Covers of the program are slightly toned. Mounting remnants on the verso of the pass have caused some light adhesive ghosting on the recto.
Dylan caused controversy at the '65 festival when, during his second performance on Sunday, he performed his first ever "plugged in" set. Dylan was angry with remarks made by Alan Lomax, an ethnomusicologist and one of the directors of the festival, a few days earlier when he introduced the Paul Butterfield Blues Band. Dylan quickly threw together a band including members of Paul Butterfield's group and others. The reception was mixed; some clapped and others booed. Thus began Dylan's transition from folk to rock and roll.
