    Description

Cream / MC5 1967 Grande Ballroom Detroit Concert Poster CGC Graded 7.5 (AOR-3.132) Direct from the archives of legendary Detroit promoter "Uncle" Russ Gibb, and designed by the equally legendary Gary Grimshaw, this October 13-15, 1967 first-and-only-print concert poster has been graded 7.5 by CGC (Certified Guaranty Company). Additional acts on this poster over three days of shows were the Rationals, the Apostles and Hoage Limit.

This Cream poster is rarer than the 1968 Grande Ballroom one we have for sale in this auction, because they simply weren't as popular yet. The respected Art of Rock book gave this poster nearly a full page in its Gary Grimshaw section. This is the very first time Heritage Auctions has had the pleasure of offering this scarce poster for sale.

It carries the nickname "Creamsicle" among collectors to easily distinguish it from Cream's other Grande Ballroom concert posters. And when you look at it, its design does sort of resemble those old ice cream bars.

You could argue this was the band still on their first-album, Fresh Cream tour, because their second LP, Disraeli Gears, wouldn't be released in America for about three more weeks. That would be the album that broke them through in America, and its first single, "Strange Brew," had already come out. Meanwhile, "Sunshine of Your Love" was in the on-deck circle, poised for December release on 45. These guys were a rocket on the launching pad at this point, just about to head to the rock 'n' roll stratosphere.

The poster itself measures 12 x 22". Although CGC did the grading, we can offer this visually: Poster has a rough top edge, with a couple of miniscule tears, a long horizontal crease on the right half, a tiny chip of paper missing above the second "s" in "Presents," a soft upper left corner, a small bit of grime above "Uncle," a 1/2" tear on the right margin about halfway down, and an isolated pinhole in the lower left corner area. Almost all of these would completely disappear if it were framed & matted; the image area is beautiful. COA from Heritage Auctions.

More Information: Heritage is very proud to be representing concert posters and handbills this auction from the ARChive of Contemporary Music in New York City. ARC is a non-profit music library that has over five million artifacts in its collection, focusing on records and recorded music, but with extensive paper archives as well. Co-founder and Executive Directory B. George has been generous enough to consign a number of items to Heritage from the archives of the late Russ Gibb, the legendary Detroit promoter who passed away earlier this year. "Uncle Russ" was as important to Detroit's Grande Ballroom scene as Bill Graham was to the Fillmore Auditorium and Chet Helms to the Avalon Ballroom. The founders of ARC and the Ann Arbor/Detroit musical community have ties together that go back decades. Gibb also had a huge ace in the hole with the talents of legendary poster designer Gary Grimshaw, who created all of the posters shown here.

ARC's credibility is impeccable. Current and past members of its Board of Advisors have included Keith Richards, Paul Simon and Martin Scorsese, and the late David Bowie, John Hammond, Ellie Greenwich, Lou Reed and Jerry Wexler.

Since these items were bequeathed to ARC from Gibb's archives, they are all original, pre-concert first printings in fabulous condition. Which is why we had the posters immediately graded, with marvelous results. We hope you'll keep an eye toward the non-profit work of ARC in placing your generous bids for these beautiful pieces.
