    Description

Courtney Love Worn Tutu From Hole's "Violet" Video With Signed Polaroid (1994). From the collection of the costume designer for Hole's "Violet" video, this satin/silk tutu was one of two tutus worn by Love in the video. Known as the "Reality Tutu," it is seen in between live shots of the band, medium shots of Love, candid band moments, and burlesque stripteases, especially in the part where Love crowdsurfs. Love kept the light blue tutu, but the designer was gifted this, in addition to her payment. The designer has also given us nine Polaroid photos from the set, including one signed by Love (inscribed "Good luck / I am / Courtney L Cobain"), as well as an extra beading fragment from a dancer hired for the shoot.

At the time of the shoot, emergency alterations were done due to inaccuracies in the measurements sent to the designer. That resulted in opening the seams to adjust the fit, but giving the bodice more texture and feel of the director Mark Seliger's idea of Courtney wearing someone else's discarded, stained, and ripped old dress. The designer let the seams out for a better fit.

The actual costume, before it was shredded during the body surfing, was made at the same time as the light blue, "Pretty Princess" dress. Both are identical in design. Both are seen in the Polaroids.

This tutu is from a very specific time where retro looks were welcomed in the alternative rock presence in the mainstream. You did not see this in videos on MTV only a few years prior.

Released as the third single from Hole's breakthrough second album, Live Through This, this ferocious video received plenty of airplay on MTV at the time, along with videos for "Miss World" and "Doll Parts." Directed by Mark Seliger and Fred Woodward, they mixed burlesque dancers with ballerinas with a retro vibe. The burlesque dancers were chosen by Love from the club she had worked at.

Also of note about this video is that it marked the debut of bassist Melissa Auf der Maur. She came into the band after Kristen Pfaff died of a drug overdose in June 1994. Tragedy was laced around Hole at the time. Love's second husband Kurt Cobain committed suicide in April 1994 after struggling with a chronic stomach condition, depression, drug addiction, and difficulty handling fame for years. With a young child to raise without her husband, the success of Live Through This was bittersweet. The album went platinum in the US, Canada, and Australia.

The chest area of the bodice measures 11" from top to bottom. Measures approx. 9" from armpit to armpit. Skirt and sleeves are folded. The tutu was never washed after usage, so it's understandable why there is so much soiling and wear. Overall, in Very Good Plus condition. Comes with Polaroids from the set of the video. COA from Heritage Auctions.
